Third front becomes active but never serious
Whenever the elections are announced, the small political parties, becomes active but they have been serious to upgrade its status at the national level to form an effective party like AAP.The non-Congress and non-BJP front of eleven political parties promised to outs the Congress from the Centre and prevent BJP from coming to power by offering as an alternative in view of coming Lok Sabha elections.
However, the third front too has been hit by controversy as two of its 11 constituents; Biji Janata Daal (BJD) and AsomGana Parishad (AGP) were absent. The other 7 parties include –AIDM,AGP, BJD SP,JVM (Jharkhand Vikash Morcha),JD-Uand JD-S and 4 left parties; CPI,CPM, RSPand AIFB.
While the BJD chief Naveen Patnaik, AGP leader Prafulla Kjmar Mahanta and PPP’s Manpreet Badal stay away and Karat downplays absence.
As per the sources, the section within the AGP is said to have alliance with BJP while BJD had a problem with the Left’s staunch opposition to the Posco Steel Plant.
Presently, the only Aam Aadmi Party looks to be strong party which has established its identity within one year of its standing. But he too is not clear about the candidate yet for the PM, saying that the matter would be settled after polls.
Non-Congress and non-BJP parties are in power in nine states. Together they have more than 221 MPs in the Lok Sabha.
The history of 1977, 1989 and 1996-98 has come a full circle. The left and regional parties will make all sorts of ideological alignments to keep the BJP out of power . Newly formed third front will announce its policy direction after providing final shape to a new combination for the general elections. But will this alternative be a effective one that will be seen in future.
But going by the previous records Third Front governments have been a disaster.The VP Singh and the Chandrashekhar governments collapsed in 1980s and 90s. Food inflation led to the collapse of Gowda-Gujral governments in’96-98.
Another significant aspect is third front is also trying to rope Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) but with conditions.The Samajwadi Party supported Kejriwal’s “right to protest democratically” who was demanding action against some Delhi police officials for alleged dereliction of duty but also criticised the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for “not respecting Centre-state relations”.

The idea behind becoming of Third Front active for all the secular democratic forces in the country who want to see an end to Congress rule and who want to prevent the party with a communal ideology coming to power at the Centre
Frankly speaking, the Third Front concept needs more thought to establish its identity to have say ahead of the elections, with more common agendas combating corruption and communalism, the gaps in its ranks attracted more attention with particular mention of issues on fighting “communal forces” and floor cooperation in Parliament, to make a matured platform.
