Retire old system of belief to give a fresh start
The year 2020 will be remembered for centuries for the global spread of COVID-19 – a tiny member of Coronavirus family whose impact will not be known for times to come.
Neither military power nor wealth can stop the destructive transmission of virus and spreading amongst the most vulnerable populations or in the areas without proper sanitation or medical support.
Really, pandemic is unfolding the care systems – both social and health and importance of decision-taking authorities.
When the virus has spread and out of control now and the global crisis is now working seriously to reshape in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, to avoid a deep recession.
There is a need to learn from the pandemic, to come out of the crisis. Mother Nature is striking back and the pandemic has given a wake call that our well being is directly related to the health of planet earth. So far, scientists have been warning about the high risk of animal-borne infectious diseases but we continue to destroy natural habitats. We have destroyed animal and plant species at an alarming rate and we have cut down forests everywhere. But with the increase in population, the forest area should have been upgraded proportionately.
Instead of re-cycling of garbage, we have dumped in the open or thrown into sea beds adding more carbon into the atmosphere. A healthy society depends only on the health of the natural environment. Green growth is the only way to prevent the next crisis and if we are not serious on this account, there is going to be a greater destructive impact than Covid-19, which is said to be the worst in the last 100 years.
Secondly, prevent is always better cure and we must learn to listen to science and the pandemic is a strong reminder to all of us and its ignoring will carry steep costs for which the scientists have long warned about infectious diseases especially after the outbreak of Ebola, SARS, and bird flu. There is a need to encourage scientists to play a greater role in public debates and policy making and public as well as to have a greater interest in science.
Thirdly, it is now a global threat and there is a need to have global collaboration as the global problem can be tackled only if we cooperate. In the coming time, nature will force our hands, whether we are prepared or not. The common enemy of global threats sometimes looks strange at this stage but Covid-19 has made it clear that conservative power concepts are no longer useful. So the better coordination efforts at the global level to deal with the impact of the pandemic in less developed countries would be a good first step for the better.
Fourthly, the private sector can play a pivotal role in the post-Covid-19 era. Health and safety of workers have to be a priority now while coping with the pandemic in a struggle to survive.
Frankly speaking, we have to design new lifestyles to cope with the crisis by rediscovering the basic values of humanity and social bonds that connect us. Need of the hour is to lay the foundation for a safer, healthier, and cleaner life on planet earth. Human and health are two sides of the same coin and we have to come out stronger within the means of technology in our hands by retiring the old system of belief, to give a fresh start.
