Devotion in Poison: Meera and Lord Krishna

Devotion in Poison: Meera and Lord Krishna

This mesmerizing painting by artist Krishan Lal, of 1983, a close friend of my father, then settled in Delhi, captures the divine devotion of Meera Bai, a legendary poet-saint. Seated with a sitar, she holds a mug of poison, reflecting Lord Krishna’s image, symbolizing her unwavering faith. Krishna appears ethereally in the sky, playing his flute, while his idol stands on an altar adorned with lamps and flowers. The vibrant colors and intricate details portray her spiritual surrender, turning poison into nectar through love for Krishna. The artwork, framed in black, radiates a serene yet powerful narrative of devotion, created in 1997, blending mysticism with artistic brilliance.

Frankly speaking, this oil painting is still hanging in our home, reminding their association and our remembering is keeping them alive.
