Postman Rajinder Kumar shares Letter Box tales as handwritten letters fade into history

Red letter boxes now carry mostly official mail, but continue to preserve the memories of an era of emotions and personal connections

The iconic red letter box, once a symbol of hope, emotions and heartfelt communication, is gradually disappearing into history as digital technology transforms the way people connect. Mobile phones, emails, WhatsApp and social media have almost replaced handwritten letters, leaving India’s traditional postal culture with only fading memories.

Rajinder Kumar, a postman serving the Department of Posts since 1995, recalls a time when letter boxes overflowed with personal letters. Families eagerly waited for appointment letters, examination results or messages from loved ones working or studying away from home. The arrival of the postman was an eagerly anticipated daily event.

“Today, most of the mail collected from letter boxes consists of official correspondence. Personal letters have become extremely rare,” Rajinder Kumar said.

He added that the Postal Department continues to collect mail daily from letter boxes installed at key locations, including Central Jail, Officers’ Colony, Civil Hospital Road, Railway Station and the District Courts. Although the volume of letters has declined significantly, the department maintains regular clearance schedules.

According to Rajinder Kumar, handwritten letters once carried much more than words—they conveyed affection, emotions and personal bonds that instant digital messages often fail to replicate.

For the older generation, the familiar red letter box remains a cherished reminder of a time when waiting for the postman was part of everyday life and receiving a letter brought joy to the entire family.

Though standing quietly on city streets today, these red letter boxes continue to serve as enduring symbols of India’s rich postal heritage, reminding people of an era when messages took time to arrive, but every word carried heartfelt meaning.
